According to Layoffs.fyi 1,063 technology companies laid off 164,969 employees. This number doesn’t include resignations, even those from RTO or other mandates. So far this year, 248,907 have been laid off in 2023. Coming off 2022’s unusually high layoffs in technology, 2023 is proving to be no lightweight, already having hit 50% more than 2022.

The 5 largest single layoffs in either year by # of employees came from Google (12,000 in the largest layoff, 2022/3 total:12,115), Meta (11,000 in largest layoff, 2022/3 total: 21,000), Amazon (10,000 in the largest layoff, 2022/3 total: 27,230), Microsoft (10,000 in the largest layoff, 2022/3 total: 1,158), Meta (10,000 in second-largest layoff, 2022/3 total: 21,000).
Amazon, Google, and Meta are all up over 45% over the following year (this year). Meta had the most significant gain – up 230% last year. Other notable companies with significant single layoff events included Ericsson (8,500 in largest layoff), Salesforce (8,000 in largest layoff), Dell (6,650 in the largest layoff), Philips (6,000 in largest layoff), Twitter (3,700 in the largest layoff).
